When Pokémon GO launched in 2016, it turned the world into one big playground. People everywhere were walking around, looking for Pokémon in parks, streets, and cafés. But the roots of this global phenomenon go back to a simple childhood hobby — catching bugs.

A Boy Who Loved to Explore

Pokémon’s creator, Satoshi Tajiri, grew up in the suburbs of Tokyo. As a child, he spent hours outside collecting insects, observing how they lived, and trading them with friends. That passion for exploring and collecting became the seed for Pokémon.

When urban development started replacing nature, Tajiri noticed kids no longer had that same outdoor experience. He wanted to bring it back — but in a new way. That idea became Pokémon, a game about discovering, catching, and trading creatures, just like he once did with insects in the fields.

The Birth of Pokémon GO

Decades later, that same spirit inspired Pokémon GO, created by Niantic, Nintendo, and The Pokémon Company. Niantic had already built location-based technology through its earlier game Ingress. By combining that with Pokémon’s world of exploration and collection, they made something revolutionary — a game where the real world became the map.

Players could find PokéStops at landmarks, battle in Gyms, and discover Pokémon hiding in their neighborhoods. It was a perfect blend of nostalgia, technology, and discovery — turning walking into a form of play.

Why It Worked

Pokémon GO used GPS and augmented reality (AR) to merge digital fun with real movement. It encouraged people to go outside, meet others, and explore their cities. Families played together; strangers became teammates in raids. It wasn’t just gaming — it was community.

Of course, the early days weren’t smooth. Server overloads, safety issues, and uneven PokéStop distribution caused problems. But Niantic adapted fast, adding safety reminders and improving access. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, the game evolved with remote raids and at-home play.

The Heart of It All

At its core, Pokémon GO stays true to Satoshi Tajiri’s childhood dream: to rediscover the joy of exploration. What began with one boy chasing bugs became a global movement connecting millions through curiosity and play.

So next time you catch a wild Pokémon, remember — it all started with a kid in Tokyo who just loved the thrill of finding something new.
